Maritime Police seizes 10kg of coquina clams in Culatra

The shellfish was illegally obtained using a trawling fishing technique.

Members of Olhão’s Local Maritime Police Command seized around 10 kilograms of coquina clams (Truncate Donax) yesterday morning following an exercise of the Portuguese Navy ship NRP Sagitário opposite the island of Culatra in Faro.

After receiving a notification from the NRP Sagitário inspection team at 07h00 that a recreational vessel was conducting trawling fishing, the Olhão Local Maritime Police Command was immediately put into motion.

Upon arriving at the recreational vessel, the Maritime Police discovered 10kg of the bivalves on board. Having written the occurrence’s report, the officers seized the shellfish, which, as it was alive, was returned to its natural habitat.
