Government’s choice for European Commissioner fails to delight opposition

The government’s choice for European Commissioner – former PSD finance minister Maria Luís Albuquerque – has gone down poorly with the opposition who see her as a reminder of “austerity politics”, with a political profile that is “different from the EU’s priorities”. PS secretary-general Pedro Nuno Santos said her’s is a profile that “on a technical level, may possibly represent what the government wants, but politically it is diametrically different from the options and priorities that I think the European Union will have at the moment”. He said it “would have been democratically healthier and more desirable” for the decision to have involved prior consultation with other parties, particularly as this government only won the March 10 elections by a short whisker.
