Driver sought following fatal hit-and-run

Driver of White Opel Corsa kills elderly woman in Évora

Police are searching for the driver of a white Opel Corsa that killed an elderly woman in Évora on Tuesday evening.

Two people were killed, in different locations, on Tuesday evening.

First came the incident in Évora, where the victim was crossing at a junction between Estrada da Chainha and Rua das Rosas.

According to eyewitnesses, the Corsa was travelling at “high speed” approaching the junction when he hit the elderly woman “with violence” at around 8.30pm, before fleeing the scene. It is not even clear if the driver slowed down following the accident (see update below).

What does seem likely is that the victim was unaware of the approaching vehicle when she stepped out to cross the road.

Half an hour later, in Lisbon, a 40-year-old man was just as unlucky at another crossroads, mown down by a car, and killed instantly.

This time the driver stayed at the scene, which according to Correio da Manhã, is an accident blackspot over which a petition has already been delivered to the city council, complaining at the speed at which traffic passes every day.

UPDATE SATURDAY: Correio da Manhã reports that a 58-year-old man handed himself in to Évora police station on Thursday, assuming responsibility for the fatal accident on Tuesday evening. The paper explains that police had already matched the vehicle with the driver, and had been to his home “but it had not been possible to identify the man” at that point. The car was later located, and apprehended for the recovery of evidence. The man has been made ‘an official suspect’ (arguido), and released on his own recognisance.
