Negotiations are underway, but there is no guarantee so far that the MotoGP championship will return to the Algarve in 2025
The future of MotoGP racing in the Algarve is up in the air as negotiations continue between Parkalgar, the owner of the Algarve International Circuit in Portimão, and Dorna, the company that holds the commercial rights to the premier motorcycle racing series.
Portuguese sports newspaper Record reports that both sides have yet to come to an agreement, casting a shadow of uncertainty over the championship’s continuity in the Algarve, where a Grand Prix has been held every year since 2020.
According to Record, year-on-year negotiations have become increasingly complex, with rising demands from Dorna reportedly putting pressure on Parkalgar. Similar concerns over the future of the championship were raised last year, at the time due to safety concerns and worries over a lack of government funding.
Missing out on MotoGP action would also mean missing out on around €80 million of revenue that the event generates for the local economy, as the Algarve’s tourism chief estimated last year.
Contacted by the newspaper, Parkalgar has refused to comment.
