Two Portuguese emigrés on holiday in Madeira have been made official suspects in the investigation into the causes of the fire that ravaged the island for over 10 days this month. It is not a case of intentional arson, more of negligence. PJ police have deduced that the fire began following the launching of fireworks (during a local festa). For now, the emigrés have not been presented before a magistrate, or even ‘arrested’. They have been identified, and ‘constituted official suspects’ (arguidos).

PJ police identified the emigrés through painstaking investigation. According to reports, they were able to pinpoint the exact spot/ moment the fireworks were launched.
