More than 14,000 road accidents, 179 deaths in first five months of 2024

The 14,045 accidents recorded on Portuguese roads between January and May this year caused 179 deaths and 954 serious injuries, continuing the upward trend in accidents and serious injuries, the National Road Safety Authority said today. The 24-hour accident and road inspection report for May 2024, released today by the National Road Safety Authority (ANSR), states that there were also 16,332 slight injuries. “Compared to the first five months of 2023, there were nine fewer fatalities (-4.8%), but 514 more accidents (+3.8%), 56 more serious injuries (+6.2) and 589 more slight injuries (+3.7%). However, the severity index fell by 8.%, from 1.39 to 1.27. It should be noted that, compared to 2023, there was an increase in road traffic in 2024, which corresponds to an increase in the risk of accidents, even though there was a 3.4% decrease in road fuel consumption”, the document states.
