Banks and other institutions have increasingly been sounding alerts over suspicions of money laundering. Over last two years alerts have increased by around 80%. Following their analysis, 1,203 banking operations involving more than €167 million have been suspended. The latest (2023) annual report by the Public Prosecutor’s Office suggests this had to do with the “efficient system” employed by DCIAP (the central department of criminal investigation and penal action), and its “articulation with the entities involved”.
