Yet another elderly driver managed to access a motorway in the wrong lane, paying for the mistake with her life. Maria da Conceição Leite, 78, set out early yesterday morning to visit her late husband’s grave in Chaves. Somehow, she entered the IP4 in Vila Real on the wrong side of the road, causing what first responders described as a ‘dantesque’ accident, from which the other two drivers involved (both young people) escaped with light injuries. Maria da Conceição Leite however was ‘incarcerated’ in the wreckage of her vehicle, and pronounced dead by the time rescuers were able to cut her out. This is just one of several incidents reported, with tragic frequency, involving elderly drivers going the wrong way on busy roads.
