Submarine was accompanied by tugboat Evgeny Churov
As focus on the mainland has been on five ‘very violent’ escaped prisoners, haring off from Lisbon in a black Mercedes, the Navy has been tracking yet another Russian vessel sailing through Portuguese territorial waters.
This time it was a “state-of-the-art” submarine of the Varshavuyanka class, equipped with advanced technology and missile-firing capabilities.
The submarine was accompanied on its journey by tugboat Evgeny Churov (a vessel that cannot currently be traced on regular ship tracking apps, but whose home port is listed as Kaliningrad)
Tracking ceased this morning, with both vessels “heading towards the Mediterranean Sea”.
The vessels were closely monitored by the NRP Setúbal, coordinated by Portugal’s Maritime Operations Center, writes SIC Notícias.
In a note sent to the press, the Navy stressed that through these monitoring and surveillance actions, it guarantees the defense and security of maritime spaces under national sovereignty and/ or jurisdiction, in the protection of Portugal’s interests and, at the same time, contributes to ensuring compliance with international commitments assumed within the framework of NATO.
