Second trial starts over death of Ukrainian in border guard custody at Lisbon airport

Four and a half years since the agonising death of Ukrainian job-seeker Ihor Homeniuk in border guard custody at Lisbon airport, and three years since three border guards received lengthy jail terms for aggravated grevious bodily harm (that led to their victim’s death), the trial of five others – seen as guilty by dint of doing nothing to help – was scheduled to begin at Lisbon criminal court this morning. Former director of SEF foreigners and borders agency (now extinct) António Sérgio Henriques, former SEF inspectors João Agostinho and Maria Cecília Vieira, and former security guards Manuel Correia and Paulo Marcelo, are facing various charges, including ‘negligent homicide by omission of help’.
