The heavy duty water bombers helping Portugal under the terms of the EU Civil Protection Mechanism are being hampered by “the intense thick smoke” of fires in the north and central regions. Right now, the country has four water-bombing planes from France, two from Italy and two from Spain. The planes promised by Greece have been unable to set out due to weather conditions in the Mediterranean, thus two Canadair from Morocco, already in Portugal under a bilateral agreement between the two countries, are due to take their place and start operating this afternoon.
