Marking the Day of National Mourning for the victims of the fires in Portugal, climate activists have daubed the Lisbon HQ of pulping giant, The Navigator Company, accusing it, and the government, of “profiting from the expansion of eucalyptus, the destruction of native forests and hiding greenhouse gas emissions (…) This week’s seven deaths cannot be considered merely the result of negligence. They are the direct result of a coordinated offensive between the state, the cellulose industry and the fossil industry to turn the interior of our country into an incineration chamber”, said Alice Gato, one of the students who sat in protest outside Navigator’s headquarters, holding a placard. The Climáximo group will be holding a demonstration, entitled: The Country is Burning, We Must Wake Up! on Sunday at 5pm in various locations, including Pedrógão Grande, Coimbra, Braga, Sertã, Lisbon, Torres Novas, Odemira and Vila Nova de Poiares.
