Opposition leader says PM should be on the ground after fires

Portugal’s opposition Socialist Party secretary-general, Pedro Nuno Santos, has accused the prime minister of “being distant from the territory affected by the fires”, saying that Luís Montenegro should be listening to mayors and affected populations. Mr Nuno Santos has been doing this – choosing Socialist municipalities for his walkabout. But the PM is in the United States this week, taking part in an event organised by Ukraine’s president Volodymyr Zelenskyy and then going on to the UN General Assembly. It has been a ‘long-standing’ date in his official agenda – and he is only due back on Friday, to talk specifically with Pedro Nuno Santos about the budget…
