Lisbon calls on government NOT to increase flights in and out of capital’s airport

Lisbon city council is calling on the government NOT to increase the hourly volume of flights at Lisbon’s Humberto Delgado Airport, to limit night flights and to phase out the airport infrastructure. On a proposal by the Left Bloc (BE), the assembly has decided “that the government should strive to comply with proposals approved” by the city council in May – namely “not to increase the number of movements per hour at Humberto Delgado Airport; to study the phased withdrawal of Lisbon airport, in order to safeguard public health and the safety of people who live and work in Lisbon and neighbouring districts; and to introduce compensatory measures for the areas surrounding the airport that fully cover the costs of soundproofing homes” (a pledge from the past that has never been honoured).
