Algarve football round-up: Algarve goal drought

LIGA PORTUGAL BETCLIC: AVS-SAD 0-0 FARENSE

LIGA PORTUGAL 2: PORTIMONENSE 0-2 PENAFIEL

Farense have confirmed the appointment of ex-Gil Vicente coach Tozé Marreco who took over from predecessor José Mota last week. His first match in charge away at AVS-SAD on Monday night turned out to be a dour affair with neither side looking likely to score throughout. Nonetheless, the first point of the season must be viewed as a positive which the club will hope to build on at home next Sunday afternoon against Estoril.

New Portimonense manager Ricardo Pessoa’s honeymoon period appears to be over as all the old failings reappeared during last Saturday evening’s home defeat by second division league leaders Penafiel.

Right back Nuno Campos single-handedly engineered the Algarvians’ downfall, turning a harmless cross into his own net as soon as the match got under way, and then compounding his error with a rash 64th-minute foul which allowed the visitors to double their advantage from the penalty spot.

In between those two incidents, the of late prolific forward partnership of Paulo Vitor and Chico Banza failed to find a way past Penafiel keeper Manuel Balde. Portimonense are next in action this Saturday evening at Leixões.

In the third round of the Portuguese FA Cup which saw top division clubs join the draw, Farense will travel to Liga 3 side Sanjoanense just south of Porto on Sunday, October 20, whilst Portimonense have been handed a plum home tie against Champions Sporting on Friday night, October 18 (8.15pm kick-off, live on Sport TV).
