Event tackled a wide range of topics related to Alzheimer’s and other dementias
The first edition of the Algarve Alzheimer’s and Other Dementias Congress was held in front of a full house at Castro Marim’s municipal library on September 27 and 28.
“For two days, participants from several parts of the country shared knowledge and experience about several areas, many of them filled with emotions and experiences from their day-to-day life working jobs related to Alzheimer’s and other dementias,” the municipal council of Castro Marim said in a statement to the press.
Following the “positive feedback” about the event, the municipality announced that the congress will return for its second edition in 2025.
It was the first and only free event of its kind in the Algarve, which became completely booked out just days after it was announced.
Several topics were addressed during the event’s two days, from the importance of diagnosing dementias, the latest scientific research and non-pharmaceutical therapies that can be used to the importance of hearing and smell and the impact that dementias have on families.
In its statement, the municipal council singles out Castro Marim as “not only a reference in culture and tourism but also a leader in the field of dementia and Alzheimer’s,” not only because of the Alzheimer’s Care Home and Day centre – the largest south of Lisbon – built in the borough, but also “due to the scientific effort and support aimed at contributing to a greater understanding in the field.”
