Families of GNR firefighters’ killed in helicopter crash awarded €205.000

The families of the five elite GNR officers who died in a helicopter crash on August 30 will receive “special compensation for death” of €205,000 each, according to orders published today. The five orders published in state gazette Diário da República were signed by the ministers of Finance and Internal Administration, and state that the five men assigned to the Emergency Protection and Relief Unit (UEPC) died “in the line of duty” when the helicopter from the Special Rural Firefighting Unit (DECIR) crashed into the River Douro. The causes of the crash are still under investigation. There was one survivor, the pilot, who has described what he recalls as all the helicopter’s instruments failing.
