Lisbon’s Central Criminal Court of Lisbon has declared that 11 crimes in the BES/GES case (that has taken over 10 years to start getting close to a courtroom) have reached the statute of limitations. Three of the crimes referred to former BES president and GES chairman, Ricardo Salgado, who still faces over 60 charges. Other defendants see charges against them fall also – while further charges will start falling by the wayside early next year. The trial, meantime, is due to start in the middle of this month – with the main defendant, Ricardo Salgado, now suffering from Alzheimer’s disease, and recently described by his own wife as someone who gets lost in his own home. As today’s stories recall, the collapse of the Espírito Santo empire caused losses of more than €11.8 billion – a large proportion of them being ‘paid’ by the Portuguese state (ie taxpayers).
