The “Paços do Concelho” building will be lit up in pink throughout the month as part of the Pink October breast cancer awareness campaign.
Tavira municipality is teaming up with the Portuguese League Against Cancer (LPCC) to raise breast cancer awareness by illuminating the pink “Paços do Concelho” building throughout October.
The Pink October Breast Cancer awareness campaign is part of a global movement born in the United States in the 1990s to inspire change and mobilise society for this fight.
Since then, the colour pink has been used to honour women with this type of cancer, raising awareness about prevention, screening and early diagnosis, which is essential to increase the chances of a cure.
The LPCC, as a representative of Europe’s DONNA (European Coalition Against Breast Cancer), places particular emphasis on the following dates:
October 13, World Metastatic Breast Cancer Day;
October 15, Breast Health Day;
and October 30, National Breast Cancer Prevention Day.
Breast cancer is a relevant public health problem. According to the most recent statistical data (Globocan, 2024), itis the most frequent (prevalent) type of cancer in Portugal and around the world.
However, if diagnosed and treated early, breast cancer has a cure rate of more than 90 per cent. Prevention and early diagnosis are fundamental to increasing survival and maintaining a woman’s quality of life.
