José Manuel Durão Barroso – former PSD prime minister, former president of the European Commission, former non-executive CEO of Goldman Sachs and current president of the Global Vaccine Alliance (GAVI) – has said in a conference designed to celebrate 50 years of democracy in Portugal and Spain that Europe “must have a clear exterior frontier”. In a wide-ranging speech on where he believes Europe should be aiming (and heading), he said: “We have a very serious problem, which is a demographic problem. And this problem brings others because if, on one hand, we need more immigration, the truth is that Europeans do not want much more immigration, and there are limits to multiculturalism”. The “Inspire Portugal, 50 years on” conference was organised by the Portuguese embassy in Madrid.
