Heavy rain, thunderstorms forecast for weekend

All districts of mainland Portugal under yellow warning; orange for Algarve

All districts of mainland Portugal will be under a yellow weather warning from Friday due to heavy rain – except for Faro district (the Algarve) where the warning will be orange – and where thunderstorms are forecast, as they also are in Beja district.

According to IPMA, the Portuguese Institute for the Sea and Atmosphere, the Algarve’s orange weather alert starts at 3 am tomorrow, and should be downgraded to yellow from 3 pm – a situation to be continued until mid-afternoon on Saturday.

As Lusa explains “IPMA issues an orange warning whenever there is a moderate- to high-risk meteorological situation and a yellow warning when there is a risk situation for certain activities that depend on the meteorological situation”.

Otherwise, a yellow warning will be active throughout mainland Portugal from 3 am tomorrow – staying in place in Bragança and Guarda districtsuntil 3 pm, while in Braga, Coimbra, Aveiro, Viana do Castelo, Vila Real, Porto and Viseu it will persist until 9pm.

In the districts of Portalegre, Castelo Branco, Beja, Leiria, Lisboa, Santarém, Setúbal and Évora, the yellow warning due to rain will extend into Saturday, in some cases until 9pm. 

As for today, IPMA predicts periods of very cloudy skies, with the possibility of light showers, light wind and a drop in temperature, especially minimum temperatures.
