Porto mayor says new round of elections in Portugal ‘inevitable’

Something of a dampener on all protestations to the contrary, mayor of Porto, a seasoned ‘independent’, Rui Moreira said today that a new round of legislative elections in this country are “an inevitability” – and that politicians are essentially ‘kidding themselves’ that the country is governable in its current form. He particularly referred to the way in which the budget “is being distributed according to the lobbying capacity of certain groups”. If the government gives benefits to corporations “we start to become divided’ between those who are ‘within the system’ or ‘are young and we don’t want them to emigrate’ and ‘the others (…) This is certainly going to end badly,” he told CNN Portugal.
