About Michael Mwenso:

Michael Mwenso is the bandleader, co-founder of Electric Root, creator, curator and EMMY award-winning creative artist. Since childhood, his unique geographic and spiritual journey has led him to possess a perspective unlike anyone else. Thanks to his West African roots, he was nurtured by powerful and wise women in his early years. Growing up in London during his teenage years, he experienced a period of personal doubt following his mother’s deportation, but he discovered comfort in black music, with legendary figures like James Brown serving as his inspirations and role models.

In his late thirties, Mwenso was introduced to New York by the iconic jazz artist Wynton Marsalis, who tasked him with directing late-night events at Dizzy’s Club and Jazz at the Lincoln Center. His arrival profoundly impacted the New York music and arts scene.

He then built a community in the United States through his love expression vehicle, Mwenso & The Shakes. Under the banner of Electric Root, which he co-founded with Jono Gasparro, he focuses on disseminating black music’s power to elevate, heal, and empower individuals and communities in polarised nations.
