Portugal to have its own proton therapy centre

The country’s first proton therapy centre will be opening at the IPO cancer hospital in Porto within the next three to four months, thanks to a donation of €80 million from the Amancio Ortega foundation. Proton therapy is a form of precision radiotherapy used to treat cancerous and non-cancerous tumors in a way that leaves patients with less adverse side-effects than traditional radiotherapy. The Amancio Ortega foundation belongs to the Spanish billionaire founder of the Inditex group, owner of clothing brands Zara and Massimo Dutti, which is also behind a luxury resort planned for Tróia.
