The Federation of Blood Donors has delivered a petition to parliament asking for the return of the ‘right to a day off’ for those who give blood. The federation believes this might act as an incentive to people who have, over the last decade, been coming forwards less and less to give blood. According to data, the country has lost around 40,000 donors in the last 10 years. As a consequence, the level of blood stocks is perennially at ‘critical’, with shortages coming particularly acute over ‘busy times of the year’, like the summer and Christmas.
