Road accidents on the rise since 2014: 220 fatalities in first half of 2024

Road accidents in Portugal have been increasing since 2014, with nearly 18,000 accidents recorded in the first half of 2024 alone. These incidents resulted in 220 deaths and 1,257 serious injuries, according to a new report from the National Road Safety Authority (ANSR).

The report, covering January to June 2024, reveals that Portugal saw 17,900 accidents with casualties, leading to 220 fatalities, 1,257 serious injuries, and 20,795 minor injuries. Most of these accidents – 17,154 – occurred on mainland Portugal, causing 214 fatalities and 1,184 serious injuries. Compared to 2014, accidents increased by 22.1%, while fatalities saw a slight increase of 3.4%.

Compared to 2023, however, there has been an 8.2% decrease in fatalities, but slight increases in overall accident numbers (+3.4%) and serious injuries (+5.0%).
