Algarve pitched to host MotoGP finale as floods force Valencia cancellation

MotoGP finale could take place in Algarve instead of Valencia

The Valencia Grand Prix, initially set for November 15-17 as the MotoGP season finale, has been cancelled following severe floodings in the region. Race organisers are now considering alternate locations, with Portugal’s Algarve International Circuit in Portimão emerging as a possible contender to host the season finale.

In a statement, the promoters of the MotoGP World Championship explained their decision to cancel the race after extensive deliberation. “After carefully weighing the potential positive impact of holding the MotoGP race in Valencia at a later date against the assurance that no resources would be diverted from those in need, organisers and local authorities have had to cancel the 2024 Valencia GP,” the announcement read.

Dorna, the company behind MotoGP, Moto2, and Moto3, also committed to contributing funds for Valencia’s recovery efforts.

Meanwhile, the organisation, alongside the International Motorcycling Federation (FIM), is actively seeking an alternate site for the season’s closing race, though a specific location and date are yet to be confirmed.

Among the alternatives floated in the Spanish media are Qatar’s Losail International Circuit, which hosts a Formula 1 Grand Prix on December 1, as well as several Iberian tracks, including the Algarve International Circuit (AIA) in Portimão.

The Algarve racetrack already hosted a MotoGP race this season in March and has a guaranteed spot on the 2025 calendar, which has placed the Portuguese GP as the penultimate race of the season.
