Loulé begins charging tourist tax

Loulé becomes sixth Algarve municipality to charge a tourist tax

The municipal council of Loulé started charging a tourist tax on Friday, November 1, it has announced.

Guests, aged 16 or older, staying at hotels or other accommodation establishments in the municipality are now charged €1 per night during the low season (between November and March) and €2 during the high season (April to October), up to a maximum of five nights.

The council is expecting to rake in around €4.6 million per year in revenue from the tourist tax, which it will invest in “infrastructures, equipment and services that improve and guarantee the sustainability of tourist activity.”

Loulé has become the sixth municipality in the Algarve to charge a municipal tourist tax, following in the footsteps of Albufeira, Faro, Lagoa, Olhão, Portimão and Vila Real de Santo António. It is home to the Algarve’s famous ‘Golden Triangle’, which comprises the luxury tourist developments of Quinta do Lago, Vale do Lobo and Vilamoura.
