Marcelo meets CHEGA in Belém, receives formal written protest

Portugal’s president Marcelo Rebelo de Sousa received dozens of CHEGA MPs at Belém Palace today, in response to party leader André Ventura’s request to present him with a protest, in the presence of his entire parliamentary group. This went forwards as Ventura requested, with President Marcelo giving the delegation 10 minutes of his time. The country’s head of state received CHEGA’s written protest about his visit to trouble-torn neighbourhoods scarred by recent violence, which Ventura later explained in a press conference lasting 15 minutes: “did not prioritise, highlight or underline police action or the police institution, its prestige and authority, on the contrary”.
