Trump win sees Americans googling how to move to Portugal

Trump’s political comeback is leading many to rethink their future in the US

Google is reporting a surge in Americans exploring how to move to Portugal after Donald Trump’s US election victory this week.

The spike, which peaked shortly after Trump’s victory speech on Tuesday, was particularly strong in Democratic strongholds like Oregon, Colorado, and Washington – states won by defeated Democratic Party candidate and current Vice President Kamala Harris in the election.

Google Trends data reveals that residents in 29 states looked up information on relocating to Portugal, with these three states leading the pack.

Media outlets in the US are already covering this possible “exodus,” with outlets like Fortune listing Portugal among the “easiest countries to emigrate to.”

Portugal is an increasingly popular destination for Americans, and offers a few different routes for those who want to move there, including the D7 visa scheme, for retirees, and the Portugal golden visa program,” Fortune’s article explains.

Even before Trump’s win, Portugal was increasingly become a popular choice for Americans, not only for holidays but also for living.

Between January and June 2024, more than one million U.S. tourists visited Portugal, marking a 15% increase compared to the same period in 2023. Furthermore, a report on migration shows that the number of U.S. residents in Portugal soared by 44% from 2022 to 2023, reaching over 14,000 by mid-2024.
