The Association of Free Russians is planning to honour activist Alexei Navalny, who died in a Russian prison this year, with a memorial in Lisbon, bearing his famous phrase in Portuguese and Russian: “don’t give up”.
Timofei Bugaevski, from the association that brings together pro-democracy emigrés has told Lusa: “We have no doubt that Vladimir Putin, recognised by the International Criminal Court as a war criminal and recognised by the Parliamentary Assembly of the Council of Europe as an illegitimate dictator, was involved in this murder,” in a strategy to liquidate opponents and “plunder Russia” over the years.
Right now, [Putin] continues to murder tens of thousands of people and destroy the lives of millions of people in Ukraine and the future of Russia in the name of personal ambitions”.
Tombstones and statues honouring Navalny have been vandalised all over the world, but Bugaevski hopes that the situation will be different in Portugal. The memorial is to be unveiled on Tuesday, between 9-10am, at Rua Visconde de Santarém, 71
