Ten years of living statues celebrated in Lagoa

Event has become a staple of the holiday season in the Algarve

Lagoa will be celebrating next month the 10th edition of its Christmas Living Statues event, which has become a staple of the holiday season in the Algarve.

The festival, described as the “oldest of its kind in the south of Portugal”, is returning with 16 “masters of the art of immobility” interpreting a wide range of characters, from religious icons and historical figures to literary personalities. This year’s edition will also feature living statues celebrating the 50th anniversary of Portugal’s Carnation Revolution on April 25, 1974, as well as the 500th anniversary of the birth of renowned Portuguese poet Luís de Camões.

The living statues will be ‘displayed’ along Rua 25 de Abril and Largo 5 de Outubro in the heart of Lagoa on Friday, December 13, from 2.30pm to 5.30pm, and on Saturday, December 14, from 10am to 1pm.

Visitors will also have a part to play in the festivities, being invited to vote for their favourite statue.
