African woman ‘gives up baby’ born on flight to Lisbon

Woman was carrying “several passports of minors” as well as “suspicious substance”

An African woman is apparently ‘free’ on the island of Madeira after having given birth to a baby on a flight from Guinea-Bissau to Lisbon and relinquishing it to the care of authorities, saying she did could “not afford to keep the child financially or emotionally”.

This in itself is not in any way suspicious, but what is is that the woman was found in possession of “several passports of minors which she was going to hand over to strangers”, as well as a “suspicious substance”.

This has all been reported by Jornal de Notícias, and picked up by other news channels.

The woman, of Guinean nationality, went into labour on the long-haul flight, which diverted as a result to Madeira.

The baby is “already in the care of an institution in Funchal”, writes JN,

The woman however was questioned for four days, according to the paper – because of the passports in her possession and because of the suspicious substance.

“She was eventually released after the results of the analyses carried out by the PJ judicial police’s Scientific Police Laboratory concluded that the product in question was not on the list of prohibited drugs”, explains CNN Portugal.

Once freed, the woman went to the institution where her baby had been taken, but informed them that as she couldn’t afford to keep the child financially or emotionally, she would give the baby up.

All this appears to have happened last week. The woman is not subject to any restrictive measure of liberty, says JN, and thus “could leave the island at any time“.

It is unclear whether she is still in possession of the passports of several minors, or of the suspicious substance.

Guinea-Bissau is a country marked by numerous illegalities, including the trafficking of children.
