GNR issues statement following recapture in Algarve of escaped Algerian

36-year-old was spotted by member of public on public highway in Estômbar

GNR police have issued a statement this afternoon to give the bare bones of the story behind the recapture this morning, in the Algarve, of the 36-year-old Algerian who broke out of police custody in Lisbon yesterday.

The statement explains that “at around around 9.40am, in the town of Estômbar in Lagoa, the suspect who was yesterday on the run from the Lisbon Court of Appeal was arrested.

“Following a tip-off that a citizen had spotted the suspect, agents were called to the town of Estômbar, where it was possible to spot a man on the public highway, whose features coincided with those broadcast by the Public Security Police (PSP) at the time of his escape.

“When the suspect was approached, and given the dangerous nature of the intervention, he was searched and found to be in possession of the handcuffs with which he had fled.

“The suspect was arrested and taken to the Lagoa Territorial Police Station where, in close coordination with the PSP, his identification was confirmed.

“The Ministry of Internal Affairs (MAI) was also informed.

“The detainee will be brought before the Lisbon Court of Appeal by the GNR”, concludes the statement.

Television reports suggest the reason Abdelkader Eddouh was travelling on foot on the public highway was because “there were no public transports available”.

It is understood he may have been making for his home in Alvor, in the hope of arranging a lift, potentially across the border.

Eddouh will now be returned to the court that was scheduled to determine the next steps towards his extradition to Germany to face charges of arson.
