Heavy rain floods parts of Olhão

Underpass in Olhão flooded by heavy rain

Several streets in Olhão were flooded by today’s heavy rain which affected the eastern Algarve most severely late this morning.

Seven occurrences were registered in the region between midnight and 11.30am, but none were serious, and late this morning, during a short period of time, there were several floods in Olhão,” a source from the Algarve’s District Command of Emergency and Civil Protection told Lusa news agency.

One of the areas most affected was Olhão’s underpass on Avenida Dr. Bernardino da Silva, which is prone to flooding during periods of heavy rain. Other low-lying areas in Olhão were also affected, which are prone to water accumulation during short bursts of rain.

Despite the flooding, officials confirmed that there have been no road closures or severe incidents so far.

Elsewhere in the Sotavento (eastern Algarve), minor incidents were also reported. A tree fell in Faro, and small-scale flooding occurred in Santa Catarina da Fonte do Bispo, a village in Tavira.

The Portuguese Institute for Sea and Atmosphere (IPMA) had issued an orange weather alert for the districts of Beja and Faro, in effect until 6pm today. This advisory warned of heavy rainfall with the potential to trigger flash floods, such as those that occurred yesterday (November 14) in Albufeira, which affected its downtown area.
