The six reservoirs and dams supplying the Algarve region are on Monday at 34% of their total water storage capacity, having risen by 5% with the rains of the last few days, according to data from the Portuguese Environment Agency (APA). Despite this clear improvement in the region of the country most affected by the drought, APA president José Pimenta Machado reemphasised the need to maintain savings measures, as no one can tell how much more it will rain, nor how the situation will evolve over coming weeks. According to data, the region’s reservoirs and dams have a total volume of around 154 cubic hectometres (hm3), corresponding to 34% of their total storage capacity. “The rains of the last few days have allowed 26 hm3 to be filled, which is equivalent to 35% of the needs of the urban and tourism sectors”.
