Health minister Ana Paula Martins is in a new controversy today, regarding her review of financial forecasts given to the parliamentary committee regarding next year’s State Budget. To the committee, she outlined a €600 million surplus. Now, she has revised that calculation massively downwards, arriving at a probable €270 million deficit. The minister has blamed “spending increases that have still not been totally quantified”. PS Socialists are having none of it, saying the whole issue is ‘unacceptable’, particularly as the health service generally has been in the news for weeks and months, due to its failures to adequately respond to the needs of populations.
