Two Algarve wines awarded at Crédito Agrícola competition

Both awarded wines hail from estates in Albufeira

Two wines from the Algarve received gold medals in the 11th edition of the Concurso de Vinhos do Crédito Agrícola (Crédito Agrícola Wine Competition), held on November 15 in Lisbon.

The event, which aims to promote and highlight the quality of national wine production, is organised by Portuguese bank Crédito Agrícola alongside the Associação de Escanções de Portugal (Portuguese Association of Sommerliers).

The prize-winning Algarve wines – both hailing from wine estates in Albufeira – were the Esquerdino Colheita Selecionada 2022 from Quinta do Canhoto winery, awarded in the red wine category, and the Joia do Miradouro Espumante 2021 from Adega do Cantor, awarded in the sparkling wine category.

The competition, which organisers say has become a “key event in promoting national winemaking”, featured 269 wines from 113 producers, clients, and associates of Crédito Agrícola, representing various winemaking regions across Portugal.

A panel of judges, consisting of sommeliers, winemakers, wine enthusiasts, and industry journalists, conducted blind tastings on October 12, followed by the prize-giving ceremony on November 15. Out of the entries, 81 wines were awarded medals, with 78 receiving Gold Medals and three receiving the prestigious Grand Gold Medal.

In addition to the gold medals, five wines were also recognised for their sustainable production.
