André Gomes re-elected president of Algarve Tourism Association

Gomes will continue to lead ATA until 2027

André Gomes has been unanimously re-elected as president of the Algarve Tourism Association (ATA) for the 2024-2027 term.

The election, held during the General Assembly on December 4 at the Algarve Tourism Region (RTA) auditorium in Faro, saw Gomes secure all 103 votes cast by the association’s members.

His re-election has “reaffirmed the confidence of ATA members in the work carried out so far” and sets the stage for the continuation of a strategy that has “firmly established the Algarve as a leading international tourist destination”, the association says in a statement to the press.

The association goes on to list several milestones achieved during André Gomes’ leadership, starting with the growing number of ATA members. The association also says it has helped member companies access funding for their marketing and sales plans, which in turn is “bolstering the Algarve’s competitiveness.”

ATA has also played a key role in improving the region’s air links, it says, headlined by the long-awaited direct flight between New York/Newark and Faro by United Airlines.

With Gomes at the helm, ATA has also seen the Algarve receive widespread international recognition, being crowned the World’s Leading Beach Destination at the 2024 World Travel Awards.

The Algarve’s growing attractiveness in overseas markets, such as the USA, Canada and Brazil, is also highlighted as one of ATA’s main recent accomplishments, as well as its success in bringing the first Portuguese-only Michelin gala event to the Algarve.

Quoted in the press release, André Gomes vows to build on the work accomplished so far.

The Algarve is increasingly connected to the world and diversified in its offerings,” Gomes stated. “This term will focus on consolidating our achievements and implementing strategies to expand our reach and results. We will promote sustainable tourism that meets the needs of both our members and visitors.”

The newly elected leadership also underscored the importance of collective effort in the tourism sector: “We are counting on the commitment and collaboration of everyone involved in this sector to, together and with renewed energy, continue shaping the future of Algarve tourism with the dedication and determination our region deserves.”
