Attempted robbery foiled in Vila Real, just after 5am this morning

A failed robbery attempt at a petrol station in Vila Real this morning left one dead and seriously injured a GNR agent who intervened, Civil Protection and GNR sources have told Lusa.

According to Civil Protection, the altercations ended with in one man dead and a seriously injured GNR agent, who was taken to hospital.

According to an official GNR source, the agent, who was off-duty and unarmed, detected an attempted robbery at the petrol station and went to stop it.

In the course of the action, a weapon was used, which caused the GNR officer’s injuries, according to the same source.

“During the disagreements there was also a fall after which the robbery suspect was inanimate”, said the same source – but the exact circumstances of what happened/ how the suspect came to fall and from what kind of height, have yet to be ascertained.

Suffice it to say, the suspect died and the GNR soldier is out of danger, despite his serious injuries.

Vila Real PSP initially took charge of the incident and then referred it to PJ Judicial Police, which is now in charge of the investigation. Further clarifications are expected later today.

Universidade FM meantime has added a little more to the story. According to the station, the suspect tried to make an escape, but was pursued by the agent. During the chase, the agent caught up with the suspect “near to the greenhouses” that are clearly nearby.
