Battling tooth and nail to stay in power, Miguel Albuquerque – Madeira’s regional governor and PSD leader – may be forced to throw in the towel as his party’s budget has been rejected today by the combined forces of PS Socialists, CHEGA and JPP. Madeira has already had two election battles in little more than a year. It may now face a third. Albuquerque’s hold on the reins of power has been steadily eroded, particularly since he was cited as an official suspect in an investigation into cronyism on the island. That said, he has stressed that ‘if necessary we will go for elections, and we will win’… so there is still a long way to go.
