Tavira opens new Animal Well-Being Centre

Centre will take in stray, abandoned or abused animals and try to find them forever homes

The municipal council of Tavira inaugurated its new Centro de Bem-Estar Animal (Centre of Animal Well-Being) on Tuesday, December 10, upgrading the facilities formerly known as the Municipal Kennel and Cattery.

Following the €500,000 acquisition of the old Sociedade Protetora de Animais (SPA) property in Fonte Salgada, the first phase of renovations has been completed, with the centre now offering “modern, functional amenities” and housing the Unit for Animal Welfare, Health, and Sanitation, part of the Municipal Environment Division.

The inauguration ceremony was attended by Tavira mayor Ana Paula Martins, councillor Sónia Pires, municipal deputies, GNR representatives, and animal welfare partners.

Says the council in a statement to the press, the project “demonstrates Tavira’s dedication to the protection and the improvement of living conditions for animals”.

“These facilities represent an essential milestone to establish Tavira as a leading municipality in this area, offering conditions to shelter and care for abandoned or abused animals,” says the council, adding that the new centre will also strive to find forever homes for the animals in its care.
