People south of Douro willing to live alongside wolves

The Rewilding Portugal association has announced todaty that people south of the River Douro are willing to live with Iberian wolves as long as compensation is paid and damage prevention measures are implemented.

This is part of a study to promote coexistence.”An in-depth campaign was carried out to promote understanding of the ecological role of the wolf and interviews were conducted with 117 people from local communities to assess their views on the wolf.

The results of these interviews showed that many people south of the Douro are willing to live with Iberian wolves, provided that swift compensation is paid and damage prevention measures are implemented”, reads the statement.

According to Rewilding Portugal, there are currently around 300 Iberian wolves in mainland Portugal, most of which are found north of the River Douro, in a ‘relatively stable subpopulation’. The rest, around 14%, live south of the river, in a more precarious situation, distributed among a handful of dispersed and disconnected packs.
