Algarve schools are assigning extra hours to teachers due to a severe teacher shortage, according to Maria João Sales, leader of the South Zone Teachers’ Union (SPZS).
Speaking to Rádio Renascença, the union leader said that the heavy workload may force many teachers to take a sick leave, exacerbating the problem further.
Loulé, Lagoa, and Castro Marim are singled out as most affected boroughs, with some schools assigning up to 50 overtime hours weekly to fill gaps.
