The new Pavilhão de Água (Water Pavilion) opens to raise awareness about the importance of saving water
Regional water company Águas do Algarve (AdA) has officially opened the ‘Pavilhão de Águas’ (Water Pavilion), a new exhibition in Faro which aims to raise awareness about the importance of saving water.
Located at Jardim das Figuras near the Forum Algarve shopping centre, the pavilion was inaugurated on Sunday (December 15) during an event attended by Portugal’s Minister of Environment and Energy, Maria da Graça Carvalho, and other notable guests, including Faro Mayor, Rogério Bacalhau.

“The creation of the Water Pavilion comes at a time of growing concern over climate change and water shortages, particularly in the Algarve region,” AdA says in a statement to the press. “This project aims to educate the public about the challenges we face and highlight the role of each person in the protection of this vital resource.”
The interactive exhibition invites visitors to learn about the water cycle, the impact of climate change, ways of reusing water and “innovate solutions” which are being implemented to “guarantee the sustainability of water supply and wastewater management.”
Equipped with technologies such as augmented reality, simulators and interactive workshops, the exhibition aims to offer “unique and impactful experiences for visitors of all ages.” A notable feature is the mural of commitments, where visitors can pledge to adopt sustainable practices.
The pavilion is open from Tuesday to Sunday (excluding public holidays) from 2pm to 8pm.
The opening ceremony also marked the signing of two significant technical collaboration protocols. The first, with Castro Marim, focuses on rehabilitating the municipality’s sanitation network to reduce saline water inflow and enhance agricultural water reuse. The second, with Mértola and Águas Públicas do Alentejo, addresses the implementation of long-term solutions for securing drinking water access in local communities. Both agreements were endorsed by Minister Maria da Graça Carvalho, says AdA.
