Towns and cities in Portugal are obliged to selectively collect textiles, hazardous waste and furniture as of January 1, 2025, at a time when Portugal is still far from meeting European targets and is dumping a large proportion of urban waste in landfills. The General Waste Management Regime stipulates that by December 31, 2024, municipalities must develop and operate a selective collection network for three new fractions of urban waste (generated by households, shops, workplaces, and public institutions): textiles, small amounts of hazardous waste, furniture, and other bulky waste. This is seen as another step towards the separation and consequent recovery of the various types of urban waste produced.
