Another super intensive olive plantation takes shape right alongside Alentejo village

Villagers in the tiny hamlet of Ervidel are extremely concerned by the events of the last week: in just a few days, a massive area of ground has been prepared for yet another ‘super intensive’ olive plantation that fronts up right to the village borders. Concerns range from the possibility of health problems, to issues with water/ pollution of aquifers, etc. Quercus environmental NGO has long warned governments of environmental problems related to these superintensive monocultures, not least by ‘agrotoxic products’. Reports stress that the local municipality of Aljustrel is not prepared to take this new arrival ‘lying down’: it is making efforts to get the plan blocked. But for now, the land preparing is continuing apace.
