Prepare for a chilly New Year’s Eve

2024 comes to a close with minimum temperatures between -3°C in the North of Portugal and 10°C in the Algarve.

The Portuguese Institute of the Sea and Atmosphere (IPMA) forecasts minimum temperatures between -3ºC in the North and Centre interior and 10°C in the Algarve for New Year’s Eve.

According to the IPMA, between December 31 and January 1, the weather “will be conditioned by an anticyclone located over the Iberian Peninsula, and by a depression at medium and high levels, centred next to the Gulf of Cádiz”.

On December 31, light or clear skies are expected, except for the northeast of Trás-os-Montes and Beira Alta, which will generally be very cloudy, with mist or morning fog forming in these regions. The wind will blow weak to moderate from the eastern quadrant.

IPMA highlighted that the maximum temperatures will vary between 5°C and 12°C in the North and Central interior and up to 19°C in the rest of the territory.

The minimum temperatures will vary between -3°C and 0°C in the North interior and Centro and between 0°C and 7°C in the rest of the territory, except for the Algarve, where the minimum temperature can reach 10°C.

The IPMA predicts that on January 1, the situation will be “very similar to that of the 31st, although, from the afternoon onwards, there may be an increase in cloudiness, especially due to high clouds,” adding that “conditions favourable to the formation of frost are expected in the North and Centre interior”.

As for maritime agitation, the waves on the west coast will be from the northwest, with a significant height of 1 to 1.5 metres. On the south coast, the waves will be from the southeast, measuring 1 to 1.5 metres, gradually decreasing to 1 meter on January 1.
