Portugal’s Marcelo Rebelo de Sousa has mourned the death of former US head of state Jimmy Carter, recalling his “symbolic support” for democratic consolidation in Portugal.In a note published on the official website of the Presidency of the Republic yesterday, shortly after the death of Jimmy Carter, at the age of 100, was broadcast, Marcelo sent his US counterpart, Joe Biden, recalling “Jimmy Carter’s tireless efforts to promote human rights and peace on the international stage, themes to which he dedicated a significant part of his life after the conclusion of his presidency and in the final years of his life”.Prime minister Luís Montenegro was equally responsive – offering his condolences to Jimmy Carter’s, to the President of the United States of America and to the American people, describing the centenarian as a “global moral reference for democracy and human rights”.
