Algarve football round-up: making a point!

LIGA PORTUGAL BETCLIC:
FAMALICÃO 1-2 FARENSE | FARENSE 2-2 VITÓRIA GUIMARÃES

LIGA PORTUGAL 2 MEU SUPER: PORTIMONENSE 1-1 AC VISEU

Both of the Algarve’s professional clubs secured important points from their pre-Christmas fixtures to climb out of the bottom two of their respective divisions before Farense went on to gain further upward momentum with an exciting injury time home draw last Sunday afternoon.

A throughout dominant Guimarães eleven had the ball in the back of the net before the half-hour mark, but the Nuno Santos effort was called offside by the narrowest of margins. Instead, a 37th-minute Cláudio Falcão header from a Marco Matias corner put the Algarveans ahead against the run of play.

The visitors pushed hard for an equaliser thereafter, only the woodwork combined with the by-now-accustomed Ricardo Velho heroics in goal keeping the hosts in the game.

Gustavo Silva finally made it one apiece following the interval before a 90th-minute Samu strike appeared to have settled matters in the visitors’ favour. But Farense refused to give up, and a 99th-minute Angelo Neto shot from outside the area secured the draw.

Next up for the club from the Algarve’s capital is one of the geographically furthest fixtures in European football, a January 5 trip to Santa Clara in the Azores.

Following their latest home draw with Viseu, second division Portimonense next welcome Alverca to their Municipal Stadium for an 11am kick-off on Saturday, January 4.
